Reply To: Characteristics of sexual offenders

Fact 5 is the most significant, and should be on the tip of all our tongues, although the DOJ puts the figure at 5.3% in its 2015 report from the “SMART” office. I once corrected my probation officer who spoke of a 43% recidivism rate. However, that figure is obtained by counting non-sexual convictions as well as technical probation violations. Incidentally, studies show that non-sexual recidivism is actually made worse because of registration. RSO’s have great difficulties with housing and employment.

Many of us speak about educating the public as to sex offender danger. We must first educate ourselves with specific, and verifiable, data. A reasonable place to start is NARSOL’s Resources->Articles and Studies section.
