Don’t accept that answer.
Start with local trucking companies where you are home daily, or every other day. Once you have shown a good (immaculate) work and drive history, you can move to bigger companies.
I am almost done with my 5 years of probation. I have been driving a tanker semi regionally for 4 1/2 of those years. I switched 6 months ago to a company that is 4000 drivers strong.
CALL FIRST and be upfront before ever filling out an app. No reason to waste your time if they are going to say no right off the bat.
OTR drivers are needed so badly that many will at least give you a shot. You have to perform better than the rest though. You are starting at a deficit.
