Reply To: Abusing his authority, NC Sheriff goes “above and beyond” what the law allows

Hoi Polloi

Wake County’s Donny Harrison is no different than Cumberland County’s (NC) Moose Butler and now Ennis Wright, who Butler appointed upon retirement last year. Cumberland County, NC is also quite overzealous in “Verifying The Already Verified” and is infamous for making up its own “laws” in an effort to intimidate RSOs in the county.

Legal action should be mounted against these sheriff’s departments who are expanding the statutes past the scope of which they were originally intended. An example: the Cumberland County SOU claims that registered offender must “come to the office and obtain a ‘travel pass’ before leaving the state and any time he or she is outside the county for more than 3 days.” Gone unchallenged, these contrived “laws” will snowball into something that becomes the new normal.
