Reply To: Passport requirement casts wide net, imposes badge of shame

I have to register as a sex offender for the rest of my life due to the crime I committed 27 years ago. Not only did I successfully complete treatment, parole and probation (for two separate charges) after I was released from prison, I also went on to earn a bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree. I now live overseas and rely on my passport to travel to and from the U.S. and other places. My current passport will expire in a little over 3 years and I’m frightened over the fact that every where I show my passport that identifier will be noticed. I have never reoffended and am not a threat to society. Yet, I will have to carry that identifier with me. They might as well put a mark on my forehead. I have applied for a pardon, but 2 1/2 years have passed with no word on whether I will get one.

The last few years I have been working on a book about my life and hope to share it with NARSOL members when I am finished.
