BREAKING NEWS: Hurricane Dorian updates

BREAKING NEWS FOR HURRICANE DORIAN EVACUATIONS

***9/5 UPDATE NORTH CAROLINA: From the News-Observer: “Should a sex offender try to enter a shelter, a deputy from the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office will take them aside, Schrader said, and offer them a location in the New Hanover County Jail, away from inmates.” https://www.newsobserver.com/news/weather-news/article234694582.html

**9/4 UPDATE: OSCEOLA County has announced: “Sex Offenders only shelter at County’s Beaumont Street Facility.”

FLORIDA: These counties, or portions of them, are still under mandatory evacuation from Hurricane Dorian according to today’s Florida news bulletins. We are attempting to determine each county’s policy in accepting registrants in shelters; most counties are not listing that information, and, not at all surprising, attempts to contact various departments for information have not succeeded. Information is included where it was given. Please leave comments ONLY if you can give definite information about where those on the registry may be sheltered in any of these counties. Comments on FAC’s site indicate that, for some counties, registrants may go to any designated shelter.

Mandatory: Brevard, Duval, Indian River, Martin, Nassau — The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office said registered sex offenders and predators seeking shelter from Dorian can do so at the Nassau County Detention Center — Palm Beach, St. Lucie, St. John’s, and Volusia

GEORGIA: Mandatory evacuation for the portion of these counties east of I-95: Bryan, Camden, Chatham, Glynn, Liberty, and McIntosh. According to our Georgia contact, virtually all shelters are schools, churches, and other places that are restricted areas for registrants due to distance restrictions. For those with RVs or tents and camping gear, the Atlanta Motor Speedway is welcoming evacuees. Registrants who are on parole or probation will be allowed to shelter at the local jail, but only those on p or p.

SOUTH CAROLINA: Mandatory evacuation deadline is already passed for Colleton, Beaufort, Jasper, Charleston, Dorchester, Berkeley, Horry, and Georgetown counties. Our SC contact reports that there are no distance restrictions applicable for registrants and that registrants are not breaking any laws in going to any shelter nor is there a legal requirement for them to reveal their status. However, those on parole or probation should get in touch with their supervising officers for guidance.

NORTH CAROLINA: Dare County is being mandatorily evacuated today as well as Ocracoke Island. **UPDATE: New Hanover County officials have issued a mandatory evacuation order as of 8 a.m. Wednesday for Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, Wrightsville Beach and Figure Eight Island. The status of registrants seeking shelter is murky. Those on probation or parole should contact their supervising officer for guidance. NC registrants do have distance restrictions in place for schools, etc., most of the places that open as shelters. As in Georgia, the Charlotte Motor Speedway is opening for evacuees who want to camp.

This will be updated as/if new information becomes available.

If ANYONE on the registry is turned away from a shelter or not allowed to shelter with his or her children and family, please contact communications@narsol.org.
